There is a superb Formula 1 atmosphere already around the Red Bull Ring. Friday practice at the 2021 Austrian Grand Prix began exactly the way the immense fan armada from the Netherlands wanted it to. World championship leader Max Verstappen dominated the first session in superb style before Mercedes battled back in the second free practice session.
If he can secure his 15th Formula 1 Grand Prix win on Sunday, Max Verstappen could make history at the Red Bull Ring by being the first driver to ever win the Austrian Grand Prix four times. The World Championship leader finished the first free practice session on Friday well ahead of Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz. In the second session in the afternoon there was a tense battle between Red Bull Racing and their fiercest title rivals, Mercedes. Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas upped the tempo as the Brit recorded the fastest lap of the day with a time of 1:04.523 minutes. Towards the end of the session, the onset of rain prevented any faster times from being recorded. Max Verstappen could do nothing to push his way past the Mercedes pair and ended the day third.
