The first major motorsport event of 2021 at the Red Bull Ring could pave the way for spectators to return to the race circuit. That will be music to the ears of the several Austrian drivers in the series, which is about to start its season in Germany.
As is tradition on Father’s Day weekend, from 12 to 13 June, the international German GT Championship takes place at the Red Bull Ring – with all the signs suggesting it will be not only be a great weekend of racing, but the first to see a crowd back! A superb weekend is assured with a total of five racing series in action at Spielberg. Spielberg, in the heart of Austria’s Styria region, is to host all kinds of GT action with a veritable armada of top Austrian drivers and teams. Among those hitting the throttle for much-loved local team Grasser Racing from nearby Knittelfeld will be Austria’s Clemens Schmid. With its Huracán GT3 cars from Lamborghini, the team has four real beasts ready for battle. Klaus Bachler is another Austrian determined not to miss his home race – he shares the cockpit of a Porsche 911 GT3 R with female racer Simona de Silvestro from Switzerland. Also competing in the Porsche 911 GT3 R for Team MRS GT-Racing is Viennese Mick Wishofer. YACO Racing will send a fully Austrian duo into their home race at the Red Bull Ring in Simon Reicher and Norbert Siedler. The Austrian pair are to battle together for points in the International German GT Championship in an Audi R8 LMS. Thomas Preining, an Austrian Porsche expert last involved in the ADAC GT Masters in 2019, is also returning to the international German GT Championship alongside defending champion Christan Engelhart of Germany.
So many great races are scheduled. In addition to GT3 super sports cars from Audi, BMW, Corvette, Honda, Lamborghini, Mercedes and Porsche, the ADAC TCR Germany, ADAC Formula 4, ADAC GT4 Germany and the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany will also serve up racing action at the Red Bull Ring.
The Austrian government has announced that outdoor events with spectators should be possible again from 19 May. Subject to the relevant legal requirements, the grandstands at the Red Bull Ring are therefore due to reopen at the ADAC GT Masters. The health of spectators is the utmost priority in Spielberg. All the usual Covid-19 hygiene and safety measures must be followed by all visitors. Seat-specific bookings also allow for sufficient distancing in the grandstands.
